BIO

Melanie McLain is an artist based in Mexico City. She works predominantly with sculpture and performance to explore the psychological impact of architectural spaces in how they reinforce social hierarchies while directing the interactions, behaviors, and emotions of those who occupy them. McLain’s recent solo exhibitions include Las cosas que son lugares in Museo Universitario del Chopo and Positus. Placement in space in Arroniz Gallery in Mexico City, and La fragilidad de las Estructuras in Guadalajara90210 Gallery in Guadalajara. She has participated in many international group exhibitions including Ensemble in Ostra Practice in Lisbon, Otrxs Mundxs in Museo Tamayo in Mexico City, Matter of Distance in the Mexican Cultural Institute in Miami. Her awards include New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, Socrates Sculpture Park Emerging Artist Fellowship and Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship. She has been an artist in residence at Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, MacDowell, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Workspace Program, Shandaken: Storm King, and Fundación Casa Wabi.
